linebreeding starts w/ a foundation animal (can be male or female). the idea is to breed in such a way as to maximize the number of times the foundation animal shows up in the pedigree and in the process maximize it's genetic influence. at the same time the amount of genetic influence from other animals is reduced by spreading it across several other unrelated animals. it is possible for a single breeding to linebreed multiple ancestors that consistantly complement each other.
