The biggest non-English mastiff I've ever seen was a Boerboel in Ft. Collins, CO at a weight pull. He was in the back seat of a Honda accord with his tail out one window and his head completely out the other.
Bull Mastiff's are a cool guard dog, big enough to handle most anything and aren't necessarily going to attack the intruder. It might be hard to find a working Bull Mastiff breeder though.
Disclaimer: The size of the Mastiff isn't as important as the context. In my opinion a 100 Rottweiler with gusto is twice as effective as a 150 Tosa without it.
I'd consider the line first:
- any titles or proven ability in the line
- family history of working
- how much time/money you are willing to invest in training guarding skills is MOST IMPORTANT.
