Jeanine I know the difference between your Central Asian dogs and the Russian Ovcharka dogs which was why I posted the term as a generic rather than specific...I also specified that I myself own a Caucasian Ovcharka rather than a Central Asian Ovcharka or any of the other Russian Ovcharkas... I totally meant for the term to be used as one would use the term "spaniel" etc...
I totally get your concern and share the concern. but I wanted to make sure you understood that I really was referring to the entire grouping of the Russian Ovcharka's as well as any of the other LGD's to reference back to some more popular dogs that people know when comparing breeds...
I don't know anything about the different Asian Shepherd dogs so when you posted about the Kochee (sp?) I was confused because you mentioned that your CAS dogs are not the same as the Kochee here...is Kochee a breed or just a type...
While I share your concern when the term Ovcharka is used to represent a specific when the term is a generic, I think it's fine to use the term when discussing generics specifically on this board because it can aid in educating people about the term itself... I also hate when people refer to the Caucasian Ovcharka as a Mountain Dog...because that's incorrect...again this is due to the lack of education regarding what the word Ovcharka Means. Rather than skip the term all together using it I think will do more help in terms of educating the general public or at least those on this particular message board. On any other message board that is NOT molosser directed I'd use the term Shepherd instead of the Russian term at all...just FYI.
