MAYPORT, Fla. -- A pit pull is rushed into surgery after saving its owner’s life. According to a Mayport family, the dog scared off burglars who tried to break into their home, but the dog took a bullet in the process.
There are plenty of reasons we call our dogs “man's best friend.” The family of Neil Chauncey saw all of those reasons in an instant.
“If it weren't for him no telling what would have happened,” said Chauncey.
Chauncey was watching a movie at his home with six other family members Thursday night. He said the real action started going on outside as they watched three masked men walk up the ramp to their home. Chauncey said one man burst through the front door with a small shotgun in his hand and that's when Chauncey’s pit bull named “Mann”, sprung into action.
“He pretty much caught [the burglar] on the arm and on the gun pretty much as he was coming through the door with it,” said Chauncey.
Chauncey’s Aunt Faye Osteen, was one of the others inside the home and said she watched as the burglar turned on “Mann”.
“He kicked him off and he put the gun on him and shot him,” said Osteen.
Plans thwarted, Chauncey said the burglars ran away, but “Mann” was down. Chauncey had little money and called all over town hoping someone could help his nine-month-old pit bull. Time was running out and the dog was losing a lot of blood. He reached a clinic at Jacksonville Beach on the phone that referred him to the Clay County Humane Society. They promised to help the dog for free.
X-rays of Mann’s injuries showed his left front leg completed shattered by the bullet. Doctors said there was nerve damage as well and the leg would have to be amputated. The procedure took two hours. By Friday afternoon, Mann was sedated and recovering. Doctors are calling the surgery a success. Mann will wake up without his right front leg, but he will wake up.
“He’s going to have a long life,” said Doctor Alicia Price who performed the surgery and volunteers for the Clay County Humane Society Animal Clinic.
Chauncey and his family stayed at the clinic throughout the surgery. Doctors say Mann will need some rest but they expect him to be on his feet within the next few days.
