My family breeds and shows Shelties so for me, the breed is natural.
When I got my first house, I wanted a larger dog. I narrowed it to a list of five breeds that would fit my needs and whose needs I could make. Most were Molossers. I ended up getting a cross of one because rescue groups were not contacting me back, phone #'s had never been updated, etc. But I met a rescue person who had one of the nonMolosser breeds I was looking at and ironically, happened to be a Newf cross as well.
When we moved again, I wanted a larger guarding breed that would be moderate energy but tolerant of kids but willing to engage if needed. We got a Great Pyr.
Our next dog will probably be a Leavitt/Olde English or a Great Dane.
Since I am a dog trainer as well, I have worked with many common and rare breeds in the best and worst homes.
