The LSGs are a very old type of dog and a lot of the history of them were lost.
There are many related breeds that have differences based on where they were developed and the needs. Pyrs are not the oldest - the dogs that they and the related breeds of that region descended from are. Pyrs are just the easiest for most who have never had an LSG before to manage. Though they are still a lot of dog - I am very lucky with mine.
Also depending on what you want from one, if it is companionship and show, socializing well is a MUST so they so do not feel the whole world is a threat. They will wander and roam and decide the whole neighborhood is their's if your do not have a well fenced yard.
I live in VA and started shaving my Pyr down now that she is a senior - she is more comfortable with a shorter coat and grooming is easier on my worsening joints now...
