I do plan to Skijor with two dogs at times since one of them is a fmale and one will be an intact male I won't be able to run them together all the time. Jaxon will be my second Skijor dog for now. He's doing really well with socialization etc... He and Bella also both love to run so it should work out well. I'm training Bella this year and through the winter will probably run her and then next spring or summer I may put Jaxon into some training as well, with Bella and hopefully she'll get that training curve to get smaller for Jaxon than it is for her. They are both smaller pits, 40-45lbs or so, at the most so together they will be just fine.
The training is where you solve the problems of what you will encounter on the trails with your commands and basic OB type stuff (tweeked a litte). I may choose to run them in muzzles, more for wildlife safety than their own though. Should something happen and I send them on their way I'd want to make sure they're not going to get too happy about "hunting" etc...or about their own "freedom". Although that's, again, something I'll need to learn about as I move forward into working on a trail seriously and on skis or rollerblades. Based on breed though I doubt they'd get very far without wondering where mom went.
So far Bella is really taking to the work. She loves to be out ahead in the harness pulling (she is a pit after all) and she also keeps an ear back for some "conversation"... She's pretty much got a handle on "Let's Go" and "whoa" and is even catching on to the "on by" command which is pretty much a "leave it" type command... Turning is something I need help with though. I'm not figuring out how to help her understand what I'm asking. She's been learning by leaps and bounds though and as I suspected, in her opinion it's quite heavenly "work". I'm still on foot keeping it slow for most of our outings.
I've also contacted a local musher, about 40 miles away in Laramie Wyoming who should either be able to get me in touch with other folks who Skijor (my mom has seen one or two out on the Cross Country trails this winter) or they can give me some help with training my girl. Hopefully I'll get pics but I'll keep you updated.
I'd love to hear more about your Lure Coursing with your dogs...and see pics if you've got some...what fun.
