I've had an interest for molosser-type dogs since I was about 14. I'm 22 now and I have a beautiful English staffie that is a little over 3 years old. I love all dogs of this type and I'll probably have dogs for the rest of my life, since I grew up around them as well.
A dog which I've always liked is the Dogo Argentino. However, here in Denmark they have a pretty bad reputation; not just amongst the general population but amongst other owners/breeders of muscle dogs as well! Amstaff enthusiasts (pits are illegal here) etc. all claim that the dogo is a breed with a mindset that is vastly different than that from, say, a Staffordshire bull terrier or an American bulldog. I've been told many a times by friends, whom also have Staffies, that a Dogo can be decidedly dangerous if not given the proper training and upbringing. Doesn't that go for most breeds, though, I respond. But then I'm told that this breed has an "extra edge" and thus is more craving as far as upbringing goes.
From my own personal experiences, I can say that the dogo argentino's I've met have all been very mellow and social dogs. Sure the size of the animal might scare you off, but I still have a very hard time believing that these dogs are any worse than any other breed.
Can anyone clarify this issue with me?
