My favorite dog book is One Man and His Dog by Anthony Richardson about a Czech pilot who finds a puppy in WWII. Its a true story.
I've read some of Katz's articles (I remember who he is now). Ironically, I have some very old stuff that has similar musings but on a deeper level than he writes. I'll have to see if I can find a copy of one of his books to read.
I've met many animal rightists and rescue people over the years that thought they had a deep connection with dogs. None of the animal rightists did and not many of the rescue workers did (not saying I do). ARs tended to treat their dogs like little humans all the while saying they weren't. So did most of the rescue people.
