What's scandalous about it is that the stable temperment everyone loves about dogs etc... has a lot to do with breeding and every dog breed that is popular and loved by americans were cultivated by breeders and pure-breed fanciers.
While this may be thrown in my face I beleive that if someone wants to have a guaranteed best pit bull and best rep. of the breed as a whole one needs to go to a reputable breeder. I feel that way about every purebred dog out there.
I'm not saying that mutts and rescues have no place in the world...I'm just saying that in most cases where one wants a solid example of a particular breed a reputable breeder is the best place to go. Reputable breeders keep dogs out of the wrong hands, out of rescue and shelters and keep dogs healthy lowering instances of HD etc... One of my best dogs came from somewhere I'll likely never know as a stray...but I still land squarely on the side of breeders when it comes to the HSUS arguement. Education is key and educating buyers is something reputable breeders do better than most rescue orgs and shetlers. To make a blanket statement that no one needs to go to a breeder like that...well that's bolox (sp?)... in fact MOST people need to go to breeders to learn a thing or two...the others, can by all means adopt.
