Among other things, I've found that Woodland Scenics' Smooth-It can set up before I have time to get it into place. Lost a whole container last week as a result. I didn't have a chance to take a picture of what the results looked like, but they weren't pretty. I've since removed the bad section of Smooth-It in anticipation of pouring more into the same area, which will be an intermodal area. I've started work on Walther's Mi-Jack crane kit, but it's definitely a stretch for my kit building abilities. Until I can get the big crane done, I've started to modify a Bachman front-end loader to be used as a container crane. It has a bit of work left, but it's coming quicker than the other crane. It's at the bottom of the picture below:
I've finished most of the "concrete" in the ethanol plant area, but have found that the buildings I'd intended to use to run cars into/through either need to be replaced with a better built version of the same kit, or replaced with another building altogether. At this time, I'm weighing the pros and the cons of building something entirely out of styrene parts that could "house" the ethanol production operations. In the meantime, the area by the massive silos has become a convenient parking location for railroad operations.
I didn't realize that this was the weekend for the monthly show down at the DuPage County Fairgrounds until I'd already visited a couple of hobby shops yesterday (was looking for a kit that is proving to be hard to locate). Managed to spend my hobby budget for the month the day before the show, but most of what I picked up needs work before going on the layout. Among other kits, I found a Lifelike Great Northern SW8 and a NYS&W GP20. Both units will need new couplers as well as new paint schemes before becoming a regular part of the layout. Also managed to find a number of vehicles whose conversion to useful models will require time and creativity.
