I hope you're not saying a graph will get readings through the ice and a flasher will not. They work on the exact same principal, they just have different displays. Any flasher will be able to read the bottom through the ice, its just that not all of them have the sensitivity to give you any reading.
Being able to shoot through the ice is also highly over rated. If you fish between December and April, the ice will be too thick and will take away from your accuracy. As for Drilling half holes and filling them with water, i think they just make you immobile, and your transducer will not be in perfect line with your lure.
As of right now, nothing beats a flasher for icefishing, unless you couple it with a camera.
