Tis the Season to be Black
Call me the Pro Black militant Grinch or the Ebony
Ebenezer Scrooge but I detest this time of year. This
is the time of year that the whole world turns lily
white and those that arent white, wish they were.
White Jesus, white Santa, white elves! Whats an
Afrocentric brotha to do; pour myself a cup of egg
nog and go off singing Im dreamin of a white

Never!
this time of year. The holiday television programs
that I watched never reflected my culture. The cartoon
characters were always lily white, except for maybe
that Black kid Franklin on Charlie Brown(Even he
didnttalk Black). The shows were either about
American white children named Billy and Susie or
English white kids from the 1800s, but to quote old
school rapper Kurtis Blowe this aint 1823. It aint
even 1970. Where were the Black kids in Christmas
town orSanta land? I guess the climate was just
too cold for Black folks or the ones that lived there
had enough sense to stay in the house during a
blizzard.
winter wonderland. Why glamorize 20 below
temperatures and frost bite? My melanin enriched
skin definitely was not feelin Frosty the Snow man
and Jack Frost. Why couldnt the Christmas
characters be chillin in the motherland, somewhere?
Couldnt I see that it was a psychological ploy to
make Afrikan people feel that the cold climate of
Northern Europe was normal and
something to be celebrated, while the warm
sun of Africa was abnormal and something to be
avoided? Oh well, where I was blind, now I see.
good all year, a fat white man would break into my
house (we did not have a chimney) and leave me a few
toys, which my parents would grumble about having to
pay for all year. It was not until later that I
realized that my little brain computer was translating
this to mean that if I didnt start any trouble
with white folks I would be rewarded with gifts from
the great white man but if I fought against white
supremacy, I would be given a piece of (black)
coal.
Santa thing I have many family members who tell me
Oh, let the baby have her Santee Claus, as if that
will be the litmus test to determine her success or
failure in life. I guess during her acceptance speech
for the 2050 Nobel Peace Prize she is going to say
and I owe it all to my strong belief in Santa Claus
or if she winds up homeless and wandering the
streets she will moan if only my Dad would have let
me sit in Santas knee, I could have been a

has been most destructive, well surpassing gangsta

throats at Christmas. Even when we grow up and see the
foolishness of believing that the picture of
Michelangelos family members is really the Messiah,
many still try to defend this falsehood by asking
"what difference does it make? The story is also told
that his purpose was not to free the Black
children of Israel (thats what I said!) from their
white (Roman) oppressors but his whole, entire purpose
was to excuse white folks from their many sins against
humanity. We as a people have survived not "because
of" our belief that Yeshua was white, but "in spite
of" our belief that he was Caucasian. But this is a
new day and it is time for our people to grow up and
put away childish things.

We must start a Dreaming of a Black Christmas
campaign to get our people to replace the Eurocentric
Christmas images with Afrocentric images, starting
with those three white folks that they have in their
