We've never been certain now many of our 70,000++ enrollees visit our website...but we're soon to find out. Please stay tuned because there's a great deal to do in the next three years before we ever decide on any candidate for 2010. We'll have a number of options for that selection but that's the 'cart before the horse' of organization.

Here is an "official" response from one of the LP's leadership to Steve and Ronachai's comments. First, the LP nevwer depended upon the "union" vote anymore than it depended upon unions for its care and feeding. Formed by union leadership breaking away from the American Labor Party, the LP appealed to a broad spectrum of citizens from all walks of life and got the response it sought. It was our desire then to make the "thieving" Dem Party honest and the Rep Party more in tune with the needs of those who were not running a big business The Working Families Party, formed to get rid of the LP has essentially replaced the "left wing" of the Dem Party and acts it. The existence of the WFP did not kill the LP - it just strengthened various elements of the Dem left and can deliver enough votes on their line to get many canddiates to do their bidding. The Green Party's concern for the environment has been overcome by it's essential opposition to Capitalism...an opposition so complete that it is too far ahead of the American public. A German-European party transplanted to the US, there is some interesting intellectual stuff going on in there but they've had a mixed success in this country and while they can effective noise (a good thing) there doesn't seem to be a grolundswell for them - especially in NY State.
The LP can only come back on the ballot with 50,000 votes in the next Governor's race. As has been stated there are a number of ways of achieving this but which one will we pick? That question will only be answered by an active party with recognized groups active and visible in communties throughout the State. It has been a long, long time since such a LP has actually existed. We've had a strong, dominant State Committee without regional representation of any consequence. Also we've had the enrollment but not the commitment to activity on either a county by county or even regional basis. This summer we need to begin organizing so that we can reach across NY State and visit with those who want the LP to come back and be a factor in state and national politics..offering sound policies and pragmatic but liberal activities to those who want to be active year-round not just on Election Day.
