Being hit on the head lessons being given in here. For starters, the idea of progressive taxation is very much a liberal idea. Liberal means generous. Those of us who make more money should shoulder a larger portion of the tax burden to help the less fortunate. I for one am very willing to do so. The real problem is not that someone making $100K/yr pays more than someone making $50K/yr. The real problem is that people making 100M/yr (megabucks for non-geeks) pays less, percentage-wise, at least. When H. Ross Perot first came out with his little charts and pointers and showed all the problems in the country without offering a single solution, they analyzed his tax plan. Under the existing plan at that time, the billionaire had paid a whopping 6.8% total in taxes. Under his proposed plan, he would have paid 6.4%. The savings would have made him the highest paid president in history. So, let's keep our eye on the ball here. Taxes are not levied for the benefit of the taxed. That said, we can all pay lower taxes if we could just get the seriously wealthy in the country to pay their fair share. However, the liberal party should not be about lower taxes. The liberal party should be about better services With the taxes we pay, we should easily be able to get nationalized health care. Instead of subsidizing oil, we could fund renewable energy. Instead of paying for a war that makes us less safe, we could educate the next generation.
