I realize the 2005 election is still raging (as raging as this election can be, that is!), but, as this IS a site for 'political junkies', can it EVER be too early to talk about next years Governor's race? As I'm sure everyone knows, the Governors race is the one that determines ballot status for political parties; if a party gets 50,000 votes for its gubernatorial candidate, it becomes an 'official' party & enjoys easier ballot access for the next 4 years. Based on this, our choice for who will represent the Liberal Party for Governor next year will be the most important decision we will ever make. Who are our choices? Who should we be looking at? At this point, it appears that Attorney General Eliott Spitzer will be the candidate of the Democratic & Working Families parties, and former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld is leading the Republican field. But there IS more! Billionaire Tom Golisano, who ran 3 times as the Independence Party candidate (& succeded in buying them Row C) is now a Republican & is sniffing around for that party's nomination, but he could also wind up being the Independence candidate again. Also, longshots Assemblyman Pat Manning, , former Assemblyman (& 2002 losing Comptroller candidate) John Faso & Sect. of State Randy Daniels have all expressed interest in the Republican nomination. With all this said, the most intriguing candidate, in my opinion, is Bill Weld. He is a moderate to progressive Republican, has access to plenty of cash, has the support of the Republican State organization, and, most importantly, is hated by Mike Long and his cadre of Conservative Party bigots & extremists. The 'cherry' here is that Bill Weld has also declared that he is in the market for a 2nd line on the ballot next November, & the Conservative Party's Row D is NOT what he's counting on! Now the issue: Should the Liberal Party consider William Weld as our candidate for Governor in 2006? While the ultimate decision will rest with the Executive Committee of the Liberal Party, there is no time like the present to hear what people think about this most important election. And while we're talking elections, please remember to vote Mike Bloomberg for Mayor in NYC, and Alice Green for Mayor in Albany!!!
