Harried I always thought that the idea behind these congressional committees was to debate any and all policy issues so that we the people could be assured the representative democracy we opted for is indeed working. I guess Senator Sensenbrenner wasn't taught those things in school. Or perhaps his school was run by Josef Stalin. Sensenbrenner and his cronies are prototypical examples of what happens when one party controls the government. In the name of democracy, Sensenbrenner, and in fact, Bush himself, should both be removed from office.

The actions of the Judiciary Committee chairman this past week were an example of the anti-democratic trend that has gripped our government since (and even before) the first inauguration of George II. When we combine Sensenbrenner's irresponsible actions with the fact that the tenets of the diabolically repressive Patriot Act were being debated, we get a glimpse into the true philosophy of the Republican Party: it's all about democracy as we define it, not as the founders of the country wanted it.
