In his massive piles of paper and memorabilia, I came across this from 1964: Liberals today seek a just society, an America that can realize the promise of its democratic principles and ecomonic and human rights, so that each individual, living in harmony and cooperation with all others, can realize his full potential. The individual in a just society would enjoy the life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness promised by the Declaration of Independence. Our concept of individual rights should be broadened to include the following social, political, and economic rights for everyone: The right to employment and a living income It's too bad that 40 years later, this still hasn't been achieved. hystrybuf@comcast.net

When I was a teenager (back in the late 70's and early 80's) my grandfather and I would often discuss politics. I was a know-it-all "born-again" type who loved Reagan, eschewed Communism, liberalism and socialism. My grandfather, on the other hand, was a WW2 vet, a socialist, and a founding member of the NYS Liberal Party. He was chairman of the Erie County Liberal party for 10 years. He loved to frustrate my arguments by poking fun and laughing, "I'd rather be Red than dead", smiling broadly, trying to get me to think. One day, after failing to get me to think for myself, he looked at me incredulously, and said, "you've been brainwashed."
