Posted by richard fu as for using the drill, my neighbor told me to use a piece of 5/8" garden (2" - 3" in lenght) and shove it into the spindle end. then take a socket that would fit snug inside of the hose. with that hook up, you can then connect the drill and socket. if it looses, use a hose clamp to tighen things down. hope this helps.

the sprocket does come off if you use a allen wrench. however, i found that i also needed to remove the 4" gear as it is almost impossible to remove the sprocket without removing the gear.

: I have researched this in the past and
: you are apparently never to use a
: file. You can buy some lapping
: compound at the Auto store and paint
: the compound with a brush on the
: blades. You then need to rotate the
: blades backwards to shapen them.
: Also make sure when finished that
: you spray all the compound off or it
: can ruin the blades when it spins
: forward. I do have a question on my
: Mclane mower and lapping- does the
: sprocket easily come off to where I
: can rig some kind of drill
: attachment and reverse the drill to
: do the backlapping-thanks

: : Well you don't really use a file
: when you backlap. You run the
: blades in reverse direction with a
: lapping compound applied to them
: which sharpens the blades by the
: reel turning in the oppisite
: direction it normally runs. The
: sparpening will be consitant accross
: the whole bed knife where as with a
: file your just sharpening that one
: spot. I would think it would be
: difficult to consitant across the
: entire bedknife.
