Mike, a lot depends on your ability to keep the mower alive. My old Mclane was a cast off that had seen better days when I got it. If the price is right, and all you're spending after buying is for gas, oil, plugs, back-lapping materials and a fancy little "Mike's Mower" decal. Then it's worth it.
Check two things... The condition of the bedknife (even wear all the way across) and grab the reel itself and try to shake it... no movement is what you're after.
After you get it, let it run for about ten minutes on your driveway so you can check for any leaks when it's hot.
: I found a John Deere greens mower that
: a local country club is willing to
: sell me. The mower is about 15
: years old. It is still being used
: and is serviced reguarly, but is the
: age of the mower too old? Would I
: be making a mistake by buying this
: mower?
