I have researched this in the past and you are apparently never to use a file. You can buy some lapping compound at the Auto store and paint the compound with a brush on the blades. You then need to rotate the blades backwards to shapen them. Also make sure when finished that you spray all the compound off or it can ruin the blades when it spins forward. I do have a question on my Mclane mower and lapping- does the sprocket easily come off to where I can rig some kind of drill attachment and reverse the drill to do the backlapping-thanks
: : Well you don't really use a file
: when you backlap. You run the
: blades in reverse direction with a
: lapping compound applied to them
: which sharpens the blades by the
: reel turning in the oppisite
: direction it normally runs. The
: sparpening will be consitant accross
: the whole bed knife where as with a
: file your just sharpening that one
: spot. I would think it would be
: difficult to consitant across the
: entire bedknife.
