Well you don't really use a file when you backlap. You run the blades in reverse direction with a lapping compound applied to them which sharpens the blades by the reel turning in the oppisite direction it normally runs. The sparpening will be consitant accross the whole bed knife where as with a file your just sharpening that one spot. I would think it would be difficult to consitant across the entire bedknife.
