When I worked for a Toro dealer, we would set up the back lapping motors, apply compound and then wait until you didn't hear any "grind" of the compound between the reel and knife (2-5 min). When it sounds like it's done grinding, check and see if there is a clean edge on the blade, if not grind a little more. At home, I use a drill with a socket adapter to lap my John Deere 22 greens and Jake triking trim mower. I try to run the reel about the same speed going backwards. Just make sure you have plenty of compound on it and I always pressure wash the reel and grease it before I start. If you use a p. washer, keep it away from belts and seals.
