Thanks andrew. I will be using bermuda tifdwarf from west coast sod. the sand guy also said he would top dress with a silica #30 (easy to get at lowes) but I thought you should avoid layering? He said as long as the top dressing is more course than the root zone I should be okay? I would love to see the sand test you have but Im not sure I would know what im looking for? Is the grain size affect how well or healthy the plant will be? I have done everything by the book so far. 1%slope,drains,gravel,automatic sprinklers ect... I just dont want to blow it now BUT its hard to figure out why the sand grain is so critical? Just wondering if Im right in thinking caltega #7 is a #7 silica sand? If so, I have seen a #10 and that seems really course (not even close to the plaster sand)

: : If he can access the spec sand with
: peat (Oglebay 137) for $1100 I would
: suggest that you see what straight
: Caltega 7.
:
: If you are goingto maintain bent use
: the Caltega, for bermuda the plaster
: should be ok but try to limit the
: fines to less than 10-12%.
:
: If you like I could share some test
: results with you showing the
: difference.

: Im really hung up on this whole root
: zone thing. I understand if its to
: fine it may not compact and crush
: under your feet and to course it may
: compact to much and choke the plant
: BUT I would think there is a happy
: median? I have done all the research
: with my local sand companies (San
: Diego) all seem to refer me to thier
: "GREENS Specialist" one
: told me if I wanted to save money
: use a plaster sand because the USGA
: spec sand for a home putting grren
: was overkill then he added if it was
: his green he would use a Cal Tega #7
: sand (I think that is a #7 silica
: sand) any way the plaster sand is
: about $650 for a truck and a trailer
: (24 tons) and the USGA spec sand is
: around $1700 dollars although Im
: lucky and have a friend in the
: building industry that can get the
: USGA spec sand for around $1100 for
: a truck and a trailer. Can someone
: explain why the sand is so critical
: and has anyone used the washed
: plaster sand with success? by the
: way the spec sand is a 90% sand and
: 10% peat.
: Thanks
