Im really hung up on this whole root zone thing. I understand if its to fine it may not compact and crush under your feet and to course it may compact to much and choke the plant BUT I would think there is a happy median? I have done all the research with my local sand companies (San Diego) all seem to refer me to thier "GREENS Specialist" one told me if I wanted to save money use a plaster sand because the USGA spec sand for a home putting grren was overkill then he added if it was his green he would use a Cal Tega #7 sand (I think that is a #7 silica sand) any way the plaster sand is about $650 for a truck and a trailer (24 tons) and the USGA spec sand is around $1700 dollars although Im lucky and have a friend in the building industry that can get the USGA spec sand for around $1100 for a truck and a trailer. Can someone explain why the sand is so critical and has anyone used the washed plaster sand with success? by the way the spec sand is a 90% sand and 10% peat.
Thanks
Robert
