From another board:
"This morning at our Rescue, there we TWO separate boxes of cats abandoned at our door: one with three young-ish kittens, about three months old, the other with two mature adults...both had a note one said "Gustav", the other said "Can't take them back to New Orleans", no donation, no explanation. The phone has been ringing all day and the MAJORITY of calls are from evacuees who brought their pets and now are heading back, but don't want to take the cats, just want to leave them here.
An example is a call I took this morning while I was cleaning and medicating. The lady said she brought her SIX CATS, but "Didn't want to put them through the stress" of taking them back home, so she wanted our address so she could "Drop them Off." WTF????
These calls started yesterday afternoon.
I talked with a friend who volunteers at the Memphis Animal Shelter and she said LOTS of people are relinquishing their pets, both dogs and cats, and that means most will be PTS. This is the Municipal Shelter (the POUND).
We're part of the Memphis Rescue Coalition; we met the train Saturday night, we have over forty kitties in temporary foster care...we're over our limit already, and we've tried to help as much as we can, $$$ and manpower..but what are these people THINKING???
During Katrina, there was a huge outcry that people were not allowed to evacuate their pets, and I agreed, still DO...but to abandon them when the storm is past in the place they were evacuated??? I know that sentence doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'm really ticked off at Humanity right now. I don't know what we're gonna do. We have Kitties hanging off our elbows, some are sick, ALL are hungry, some have ringworm.
I am really discouraged. Overwhelmed. Right now, I'm not proud of my own species.
DAMMIT, it seems we try and try and try and it isn't ever enough."
