...wasn't that bad in terms of the language. I've been there twice, for three or four days each time. We were visiting and staying with friends and went out for lunches and dinners since we were busy walking and taking the Metro all over the city to see things. I found that some people, especially the servers at restaurants, seemed eager to practice their English (I guess they heard us talking with each other), even though two of us spoke French and were willing to use it. For the most part, people were friendly and helpful if I didn't express myself very well or didn't understand something they said in French. There was just one exception I remember. It was kind of comical, really. Our friends took us to a nice restaurant for dinner and we sat outside for the lovely evening. I ordered my meal in French, but the waiter -- a real snooty guy -- was rather upset that I ordered an appetizer as a main course. I knew what I was doing, and that's what I wanted. I guess he thought I was just another stupid American tourist, and he just walked away in a huff. When he came back, I still wanted the same thing, LOL. He insisted it wouldn't be enough food for a main course, but I said it would be fine. When the food came, the appetizer I ordered was huge, so I don't know why he was so upset. LOL So he sort of fit the stereotype that Americans have about Parisians. But almost everyone was not like that at all, I'm happy to say!
