It had to be a daunting task. How do you organize the miles of footage, the thousands of photographs? He did it by involving us in the lives of a number of people from four towns in different parts of the U.S. who served in the war, and some who remained home. Their on-camera comments are wonderfully reflective and articulate, sometimes funny, and always absorbing. They bring you through the four years, and at the end you hear what they have been doing since they were soldiers. It's a most captivating series, and there's much to be said about it. Just saw the last episode tonight. But it's very late and I've got a date with a mattress. I'll write later on about themes and moments that are the most memorable for me. They are still gelling in my mind.
