She now has something called aphasia where she understands but cannot speak the words she needs to, she also needs to learn to read and write again. But, she can sign her name with her right hand...amazing! She has been going through a divorce since November 2004 and I believe it broke her heart and caused enough stress which resulted in her stroke last summer. I know that sounds less than scientific. But she would be married 50 years next year had everything worked out ok. The doctors coudn't find anything that caused the stroke. Her heart and neck arteries were fine. But she was a smoker which can be a significant contributing factor to stroke. I worry about her becoming depressed. But I must believe and trust that she will continue to fight. Today I have taken the day off to go to her home and pull together her divorce paperwork. It delights me to see her alive and well. I am very grateful that she's still here as I love her so very much. One of the things I have learned that I must share(as I know your parents are older Louis) are the indicators that a person has had a stroke: 1. Ask them to smile, if they cannot or the smile is lopsided or uneven they may have had a stroke 2. Ask them to hold both arms evenly above their head, if they cannot they may have had a stroke 3. If you notice them walking around and appearing to be fine but they say something garbled where they use a word in a sentence that doesn't make sense in context, they may have had a stroke. For example, instead of saying "I'll meet you on Thanksgiving Day" they say something like "I'll meet you on Ice Cream Day"

I am very happy that my Mom has made such a magnificent recovery. She had a very serious stroke. The kind people usually don't recover from. Her General Practioner Doctor has said it's quite remarkable. I have many people to thank for their good thoughts and prayers ![]()
