Posted by Dot on 2/5/2007, 8:20 pm, in reply to "Has everyone seen "Babel" yet? It's playing in theatres again..." Since the Golden Globes win and Oscar noms, Babel went from showing at three or four theaters in this area, to seventeen. I wonder how well it's doing, as I see it as more of an art house film than a multiplex movie. Here are some comments I wrote a while back when I saw it .... I liked it very much. It's extremely well-acted, by pro's and non-actors alike (wow, the Moroccans! So natural!). The time-and-place jumps, rather than being jarring, served to knit all the stories together into the themes of parent-child communications (or lack thereof) and our interconnectedness across the planet. The subthemes around immigration issues and fear of terrorism were most timely. The movie is a feast of visuals and sound, particularly in the settings in Japan (the breathtaking, swirling disco scene) and Mexico (the wedding scene). Loved what the director did with juxtapositions in those two segments (the silence in the midst of the wedding merriment, as they show the Mexican nanny reconnecting intimately with an old flame – very poignant; and the sound/silence cuts in the disco). What marvelous work by the young newcomer Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi, and by the old pro Mexican actress Adriana Barraza! I was also very taken by the score, particularly the music playing during the climactic helicopter scene w/ Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. The movie stayed with me for days afterwards. I'd love to see it again....but have been putting movie-watching efforts into seeing the other films that are drawing attention/awards.
