Saluda Shoals Park: “Picking’ & Piggin’ BBQ Cook Off
5605 Bush River Rd., Columbia, SC 29212
The location for this event is beautiful Saluda Shoals Park located at: (GPS address) 5605 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212. We’ll be judging in the “Paw-Paw” Picnic Shelter. When you come in the Main Gate of the park, you may have to stop at the Park Entrance Station, if an attendant is on duty tell them you are a SCBA Judge for the BBQ Cook Off. You will not have to pay a park entrance. Go to stop sign, turn right then cross over a bridge you will see a sign on the left for the “Paw-Paw” picnic shelter (second turn). Turn left there will be ample parking in front of the shelter. If you miss the turn the next turn to the left is where the cookers are located. You cannot park there. Watch for the SCBA Judging signs. PLEASE NOTE: The picnic tables that we judge on are made of perforated metal which have holes in them. Please bring a clipboard or some solid item to place your score sheets on. Also, please bring a calculator.
There are approximately 21 Teams cooking in this event. They will be cooking Butts and some will be cooking Ribs. There are no Friday Night activities at this event.
The judges meeting will start promptly at 9:00 AM. Please note that we have assigned judges to specific tables to insure an equal distribution of Master, Senior, and Certified judges at each table. You will find your table assignment on the sign in sheet. Butts will be judged at 10:00 AM and Ribs will be judged at 11:00 AM. If you are receiving an Apron, Senior Hat/Apron, or Master Hat/Apron and have not notified me or posted it on the website sign-up page, please get in touch with me so that I can ensure that I have one available to present it to you for all your hard work.
If you have a family member that is cooking with a team you will not be able to judge at this event, but we can assign you to other duties. Please let me know in advance. Also, please remember not to fraternize with the cook teams on Saturday morning until all judging is officially over. A quick hello and good luck are acceptable. The restrooms are located in the cook’s area at the top of the hill to the right, please if you need to use the restroom try to use it prior to 9:30 AM when the cookers start to line up.
We encourage you to stay after judging to enjoy the park, talk to the cook teams this is a great way to get to know them (No discussing any specifics of any samples or scores), then stay for the awards.
