SOUTH CAROLINA IS THE BBQ STATE!
Thank you to each of the judges who signed up to participate in the 1st Annual Kershaw Sheriff’s Foundation BBQ Cook-off in Lugoff, SC on Saturday, November 11th, 2017 being organized by Gadgets of Lugoff. This event is on Veteran’s Day and we plan to honor and recognize our Veterans.
The Location of the Event is: 96 Hwy 601 South ~ Lugoff, SC 29078. The event is organized by Gadgets of Lugoff (a local restaurant/bar) and the event is adjacent to the facility. Approximately 1-2 miles off Interstate Hwy (Exit 92.) We found it easily by putting the address into our GPS.
FRIDAY NIGHT: This will be the “Anything Butt” competition. First responders will be the judges of this event (asked by the organizers) but we still need 2-3 Senior or Master Judges to help facilitate the judging tables. We can also use additional volunteers to help facilitate additional details. Let me know as soon as possible if you would like to volunteer at the Anything Butt event on Friday night. We will have a job for you. Be there by 6:00 PM. Meeting is at 6:15 PM and Judging is at 7 PM.
SATURDAY: There will be signs posted to tell you where we are meeting at Gadgets for judging when you get there. You can arrive early, sign in, mingle, and the judges meeting will commence promptly at 9 AM. We will be judging 2 categories: BUTTS & RIBS. The turn in time for BUTTS is 10 AM. and for RIBS is 11 AM.
I need to know if any of you will be moving to another level in the SCBA judging hierarchy:
1. If this is your 4th judging event, you will be receiving your SCBA apron and promote to Certified Judge.
2. If you have judged in 15 events and cooked at least one (1) time with a BBQ Cooking team, then you will move up to a Senior Judge and will receive your SCBA Senior Judge hat.
3. If you have judged in 30 events and cooked with at least three (3) BBQ cooking teams, you will move to the highest ranking of judges that is of a Master Judge. You will receive your SCBA Master Judge hat.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
1. If any of you have a family member that is cooking with a team at the Mauldin event, I need to remind you that you will not be able to judge in this event. We do have other duties that you can do but you will not be able to judge in this event. Let me know if any of you fit into this category.
2. ABSOLUTELY “No talking or discussion of the tasting that is being done between the judges” until all scores have been tallied and verified. The table captain will facilitate and let everyone at their table know when the BBQ is open for discussion!
3. Family members cannot sit at the same judging tables.
This includes husbands/wives/siblings/children/aunts/uncles/significant others! We will do assigned tables but sometimes we do not recognize relatives if names are different.
4. No fraternizing with the cookers prior to judging. After judging is completed, you are free to visit cook sites. But PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS what you tasted at the table, the appearance of sample boxes, or ask what their box numbers were in the competition.
Lastly, we count on each of you to be there if you signed up for this event. We all know that our schedules change from time to time and if this happens, I kindly ask that you notify me so that we know how to prepare appropriately. I am looking forward to seeing each of you in Lugoff. Because of YOU, SCBA is a professional, successful organization, providing expert fair and consistent judging to these events!
REMEMBER SOUTH CAROLINA IS THE BBQ STATE! Come expecting some good Que!
