SOUTH CAROLINA IS THE BBQ STATE! Thank you to each of the judges who signed up to participate in Mauldin’s Annual BBQ Cook-off and Family Festival this next Saturday,on September 27,2014. This is a popular event. This year we have 24 Cooking Teams. We have a waiting list of those who wanted to come but we are out of room.
The Festival location is at the same place as last year’s in the heart of Mauldin at the Mauldin Cultural Center – just one (1) block from the City Hall and Police Dept on East Butler Road. If you are putting the address into your
GPS, it is 101 E. Butler Rd. Mauldin, SC. The judging will be held in the Cultural Center in a beautiful indoor air
conditioned facility. When you get done judging, there is an exercise/sports facility nearby where you can work out. (just kidding! Membership is required) Parking is available across the street at the United Methodist Church.
Please be careful crossing the busy street. We anticipate having officers to stop traffic for those parking at the church. We will be at the Cultural Center judging facility early. COME EARLY FOR BREAKFAST. Waffle House is treating
both the cookers and judges to a complimentary breakfast. There will be signs posted to tell you where we are meeting when you get there. You can arrive early, sign in, mingle, and the judges meeting will commence promptly at 9 AM. We will be judging 2 categories: BUTTS & RIBS. The turn in time for BUTTS is officially 10 AM
with the first horn blow at 9:50 AM. The turn in time for RIBS IS 10:50 AM with the first horn blow at 10:40 AM.
**PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A DIFFERENT TIME SCHEDULE THAN WHAT WE CUSTOMARILY HAVE FOR RIBS. **
I need to know if any of you will be moving to another level in the SCBA judging hierarchy. If this is your 4th judging event, you will be receiving your SCBA apron. If you will be receiving your SCBA Senior Judge hat if you
have judged in 15 events and cooked at least one (1) time with a BBQ Cooking team. OR if you will be receiving your SCBA Master Judge Hat if you have judged in 30 events and cooked with at least three (3) BBQ cooking teams.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
1. If any of you have a family member that is cooking with a team at the Mauldin event, I need to remind you that you will not be able to judge in this event. We do have other duties that you can do but you will not be able to judge in this event. Let me know if any of you fit into this category.
2. ABSOLUTELY “No talking or discussion of the tasting that is being done between the judges” until all scores have been tallied and verified. The table captain will facilitate and let everyone at their table know when the BBQ is open for discussion!
3. No fraternizing with the cookers prior to judging. After judging is completed, you are free to visit cook sites. But PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS what you tasted at the table with the cooks.
If any of you need lodging accommodations, please contact me at 864-505-8835 and I will be happy to provide you with a list of nearby motel/hotels.
Lastly, I count on each of you to be there if you signed up for this event. We all know that our schedules change from time to time and if this happens, I kindly ask that you notify me so that I know how to prepare appropriately.
I am looking forward to seeing each of you in Mauldin. Because of YOU, SCBA is a professional, successful organization, providing expert judging to these events! REMEMBER SOUTH CAROLINA IS THE BBQ STATE!
Blessings!
