At one time MIM had a sort of invitational within the contest - if you were a winner of one of their Sanctioned Contest Network events (or won a passdown) then you were guaranteed a spot - but you still had to pay for that spot! They've since stopped recoginizing the SCN, and now it's all about who can pay. MIM has announced for years that they're trying to be more "diverse" in their selections, but trust me when I say that if you get your check to them, they'll find a spot for ya.
I don't do nearly as big a party as JB, but we still spent right at 5000 for the week (we get there the Saturday before and spend the entire blasted week in lovely Memphis, TN). It is definitely a bbq experience you want to do at least once, if you dont mind spending the money for it.
