I would not spend $10,000 to enter 5 of the big contests in the country. BBQ is about fun, spending that kind of money for me is rediculus.

: Memphis in May is not an invitational and with
: the economy the way it has been anyone
: willing to send in an application and fork
: over the thousands of dollars it cost to
: compete will almost certainly ge accepted.
:
: Now lets talk about what it costs.......
:
: the worst spot on the river will run you
: around $1000 dollars once you pay the
: initial fee, plus electric fee, plus porto
: john (which is mandatory), plus clean up
: deposit which you only get part of back no
: matter how clean you leave your spot.
:
: The absolute last day you can load in on is
: Wednesday and all vehicles must be out of
: the park by noon. So you will have to get a
: hotel room for at least 4 days at $150 per
: day. That is about what we pay for a holiday
: inn express that is 5 miles from downtown.
:
: It is about 700 miles from Charleston to
: Memphis and pulling our huge cooker we only
: get about 10mpg. I cost us several hundred
: dollars in diesel.
:
: Now figure in all your normal competition
: costs (meat, tinfoil, gloves, charcoal, ect)
: plus eating out for 5 days
:
: I would say the bare minimum to cook in
: Memphis would be $3000 to $5000 dollars. We
: probably spend closer to $10000 dollars
:
: But the experience of cooking bbq and
: watching the sunset across the mississippi
: river and walking across the largest stage
: in bbq is priceless.....

: Each year for the past several years various
: national invitational cook-offs, such as
: Best of the Best in Douglas, Georgia and the
: American in Kansas, have asked me for
: nominations of teams for their cook-off.
:
: In the past I’ve tried to give them a list
: of teams based on both MBA points and on the
: team having won at least one first place in
: one or more competitions. These
: invitational events want first place winners
: (for the most part) but in conversations
: with me they have both embraced our MBA
: structure. Indeed, both have agreed, from
: time to time, that other states should
: follow our good lead in deciding who the
: best cookers are.
:
: This year, for the first time, Memphis in
: May has asked for a list. We will follow
: the same precedent we have set for the last
: several years; that is, we will submit the
: top teams as represented in the MBA points.
: When there is a tie for a position such as
: the current tie (September 21, 2009) of
: Pickin’ Porkers and W.E.T. Site Boys for
: eighth place, we will submit both team
: names.
:
: After talking with the people at Memphis in
: May we have agreed that the SCBA will not
: submit our list to them until the first of
: November, 2009. The MIM people tell me that
: they will mail invitations to the list I
: submit in the middle of December. This
: gives us time to compile a better list and
: it gives more teams more time to improve
: their point standings.
:
: It is undetermined at this time as to how
: many places they will accept but I have
: tentative approval for the first 15 places
: on our list. The first 15 places can
: include “ties” so there will probably be
: more than 15 team names submitted.
:
: If you’ve ever wanted to cook at Memphis In
: May this is your chance and you can do it by
: presenting your best efforts in the
: remaining cook-off events that the SCBA
: judges.
:
: The next MIM is May 13-15, 2010, by the way.
:
: Good luck to all.
