Yes, I was awake. I get nervous too especially right before the procedure. At the last minute I think I am going to panic but then I am okay. Once numb with the local, there isn't any pain during the surgery because the area is numb. I mean I could feel the surgeon working but no pain. Also there are two assistants during the procedure and they help out too. I think you can do the local if you want to try it out but it's okay if you don't want local only. Just do whatever makes you more comfortable!!
