Well, there is such a thing as a Palomino Dun. They can carry both genes and it is sometimes very difficult to see dun factor on a Palomino. Because the dun carriers in his family were black based does not mean that they would only throw a black based dun. They could just as easily throw a red based dun because the dun gene is not linked to color.
