Merlyn Masters of Liberty Nebraska, formerly a native Missorian and fellow field trialer and bird dog enthusias, lost his battle to pancreatic cancer in the early am hours of Saturday, May 25th.
Merlyn was diagnosed with his illness in February of this year and throughout the time of his illness,am proud to state that I was able to provide care and friendship for him.I am even happier to state that now an old friend's suffering has finally come to an end and that he is now with those whom have gone before him to dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
My only hope is that Merlyn is now at peace and living large once again as he sits atop a beautiful high stepping, fast moving walking horse, following a brace of true all age or class shooting dogs in that sacred place where the land and the horizons go on forever, where the big bottoms are numerous and the edges never cease and where the whistles of the bobwhite quail and cackles of wild pheasants are numerous and heard often and the covies are abundant and truely amazing, where the call of point echos loud and hangs heavy on the morning fog!
Merlyn's remains are being cremated and his ashes will be set free in those wild places that he cherished and held so dear to his heart and a memorial service and gathering of family and friends will be held at a future date. "Via Con Dios Mi Amigo".

So sorry to hear this news. Merlyn was a very knowledable man on dogs and horses. I spent some time with him at Husker along with Don J, a very good friend of his and mine. God Bless you Merlyn and I'll see you when I get there!

Don, eventhough the years have come and gone ever so quickly, your mind and memory remain as sharp as a tack. That was 26 years ago of which you spoke.Yes those were the days, when one could go run an honest bird dog in heated competition on wild birds and let the dogs sort themselves out.
That was my first broke trial dog and yes old Merlyn taught me how to break a dog and how to handle such with that dog "Counterfit Slim". He was a good one and I can still close my eyes and remember all the training sessions and trials with him and old Merlyn. That dog was very good at finding wild birds and Merlyn was very keen at finding Slim even on a limb find.
Take care Mr. Don and hope to talk to you in the near future.

My heart goes out to all his family and friends. I lost my sister to pancreatic cancer over a year ago. It's got to be one of the worst types. She was diagnosed and lasted 36 days. I still can't believe it.

Dave, thanks for the kind thoughts and having experienced it first hand through the loss of your sister, you than know what a horrible illness it is for anyone to have to endure.Once diagnosed, there is virtually no hope in beating it or even slowing the progression of the disease.Unfortunately for the person afflicted with such illness, it often seems that they have to go to hell and back a couple of times before the Angels finally come calling!
Reflecting on the years passed and remebering the good times you had will often ease the pain and settle the heart of the loss of your loved one.
