I'm planning a trip to ND (or similar area) for the last 2 weeks of August to train my 5 Pointers and Setters. I'm trying to find an area with good Sharptail numbers and a place to stay. I've never been to the prairies before, but it's been on my bucket list, and I've got 3 great Derbies out of my 5 dogs that will be just perfect for it then, and I'm not getting any younger (52). Plus, the boss (AKA: "lovely wife") has given me permission to wear out my legs for 2 weeks (probably wants to get rid of me). I don't have horses or ATVs, just the dogs and lots of shoe leather (although I wouldn't pass up the chance to rent a horse). Problem is I can't seem to find a place to stay and any information on good Sharptail areas. From the ND Game Dept website I've narrowed it down to the western part (any suggestions there?). I'm thinking the farther north the better, just because of the heat(?)-maybe I'm wrong there. Problem is, web-searching since last winter, all that I can come up with is "no Sharptail in our area", or "Oil industry has it booked", or when I sent a polite information request email to the ND Game Dept. (that was a mistake) they forwarded it to their Sharptail Biologist, and his curt email response basically said to stay home and train on pen raised birds(!). And he wasn't saying it because they have a lack of birds either. Apparently there must be a problem with out of state dog training/trainers there? Here I thought, from everything I've read, it was the "promised land" for dog training . Anyways, can anyone help me out with some locations to go or suggestions. Areas where I could train on good bird numbers and find a room, cabin, B&B, rent, etc., someplace to stay? Doesn't have to be fancy at all, just lots of Sharptails around (Pheasants and Huns would be nice too). ND is a long drive from Pennsylvania so I don't want to go without a plan. I'm only 2 months away now and starting to get desperate. Obviously if you don't want to post locations on the web for everyone to see, please email me direct. I'd be willing to pay to go on someone's training/lease area if it was good, or even pay to hook up with a Pro. I'd also be willing to look at other states/provinces. Thanks for any information, it is appreciated!
