Back when I was working with Gene Uhlman, we found it better to start a dog on box birds and then switch to wild. Starting with wild made some dogs look bad on the libbies but you could come back to them with no problem if you started a dog on them. Gene was running mostly 1/2 hour horseback trials in NE OH, NY and W PA and iirc, he seldom if ever ran on wild birds. Maybe a few at Killdeer/Bville that had been liberated in past seasons. But he trained on them as wild pheasants were plentiful around the Pittsburg area back in the day. Or at least they were plentiful on his training grounds. Harry
