: Don -
:
: If it were me. I'd get in there with an
: industrial, walk behind string trimmer and
: knock it down for now.
:
: I don't know what the growing season is for
: cheatgrass and such, but if it sprouts and
: greens up before the other grasses, you can
: knock it down in the very early spring with
: Round Up. Round up will kill anything that
: is actively growing. I use it to kill off
: multiflora and such, which is the first
: stuff to green up in the spring and the last
: to die off in the fall.
:
: I would keep the dogs off the Round Up
: treated areas for a week or so.
:
: If that's not an option, I would consider
: moving the dogs out of one pen, hit it with
: Round Up and then, after about a week,
: scratch it up fertilize and seed it with
: some tall fescue or whatever else will grow
: well in your area. A dense ground cover
: should keep the unwanted stuff from coming
: back for quite a while. Once the grass is
: coming up in that pen, move on to the next
: one and repeat until the are all renovated.
:
: I would also look to eliminate the awn
: producing grasses from any adjacent areas,
: keeping it as far away from the dog areas as
: I could, espeically those areas upwind of
: the dog pens. That should keep the amount
: of unwanted volunteer grasses down.
:
: Good luck.

: I have large grass exercise pens which my
: dogs
: are check corded each day. They run play
: wrestle and dig large holes. It makes it
: imposable to mow in summer. We have cheet
: grass that ripens same time as wheat. In past
: years I have had dogs come up with
: Nocardia.Sam had a sever case last year with
: hugh swelling on right hip. Anti Robe cured
: it with no cutting thank heaven .
: Does any know of a spray that I could use
: the kill this stuff this year.It is headed
: out now.It would
: just have to be a spray that would not in
: any way harm a bird dog. Thank You Don
: I wonder if it would work weed whack it as you say then burn it when its ready and dry. It has had good rain this year and its about 24 inches tall and thick thick.Just took over the pens which are about a acre or so.
Dogs benifit from the daily check cord plus mental and phisical advantage it gives them.Last year I just put horses in there to keep it under control but It is a job to keep the wast cleaned up.
: Thanks as I need alot of advise and ideas on this and other stuff. The seed is not in the ripe stage yet which should occur in a couple weeks
