Remember that Gerald won his first championship at Bernville. They ran the National Pheasant Championship out there and he won it. We all thought that those birds were here forever. Then about 1983 they were all gone! The farmer down the road stopped to ask me if I had seen any pheasants on his farm and I told him no. They were just gone from the East Coast. I was told by an officail in the Ag Dept that New Castle got em all that year.

: Those were the days weren't they Carl? Pete
: and I would work those big alfelfa fields
: around Allentown and run out of blanks. I
: had a diry farm near the house were I could
: check cord derby dogs and put them on 30
: clutches of baby pheasants in about an hour.
: Start in July and have then stedy to wing
: and shot by October. I know your to young to
: remeber but Nitchman ran a Pheasant Ch in
: his big potato country near Cranberry NJ and
: it was all on wild birds. They also ran a
: wild bird trial at the orginal Indiantown
: Gap gorunds (till they ran I-78 through the
: middle of it) and at Bernville. There was
: also a wild bird trial on the prison farm up
: near Selinsgrove. Clair Gross's trials
: would always product a lot of wild pheasants
: as well as out at the Franklin County
: grounds too.
:
: The young guys in PA will never see the joy
: and pain of running on wild birds again.
