The California State Assembly and State Senate has recently approved ACR 175 declaring December 14, 2002 as the Day of the Horse in the State of California.
Because of the tremendous importance of the horse and equine related activities in the County of Riverside, we have petitioned the County Board of Supervisors, led by Supervisor John Tavaglione, to declare the Week of December 7-15, 2002, as the Week of the Horse in Riverside County.
It is recognized that the "pleasure horse community" has an enormous economic impact upon all areas of Riverside County and that the County has the largest horse population per capita in the State of California.
Therefore, it is time that we show and demonstrate to both the legislative authorities and the citizens throughout the County just exactly who and what we are.
We plan to do so by staging exciting equine related activities in various locations two and three times per day each day of this Week of the Horse in Riverside County. This will result in attracting the media, the community and our local officials as well as drawing the attention of the rest of the State to our area.
We wish to stage activities such as horse shows, cattle events like team penning, trail rides, tours of ranches and businesses, gymkhanas, parades, demonstrations of handicapped riding programs or sheriff and police search and rescue operations, cowboy shooting matches on horseback, and mounted drill team exhibitions. We already have slated equine involved parades in Indio and Palm Springs on December 7th and Perris and Corona on December 14th. We already know of at least 3 cities {clubs} planning "Christmas Caroling on Horseback and the CSHA is planning a big "Challenge Trail Trials" with the winning club teams walking {riding} off with cash prizes. We might finish off this big week with huge trail rides in various locations throughout the County from Coachella or Blythe to Norco.
I am sure that you are starting to get the idea. There are many venues all over the County and just as many ideas of how to use them.
The greatest need we have right now is to know who and what club already has events scheduled for this time, how we can be a part of them and how they can be a part of this big week, what other ideas might come forward, how we can best bring the horse and horsemen to the attention of the rest of our neighbors and the media and the local officials. For that we need your assistance.
Please help us, first by getting the word out to every club or business or individual you know about the meeting, secondly by putting this on your own calendar, third making your plans to attend and, fourth by showing up with your ideas and your calendar. We also ask that you contact the leaders of all of the equine organizations you might know of or at the least let us know who they are and how to contact them.
We wish to acknowledge the Board of Directors of the Jurupa Area Recreation & Parks District for facilitating and hosting the initial of the Steering Committee and look forward to seeing all of you there.
REMEMBER, THIS IS FOR YOU AND YOUR FRIEND, THE HORSE!!
