I agree that if you go with unlicenced haulers you leave yourself at the mercy of fate. However we had an enquiry re shipping 7yrs.ago.We gave our DOT and authority numbers on open forum and started getting calls 6 weeks later as to the whereabouts of horses we had no clue about.Either the people we answered or some enterprising individual decided that the numders would work for them and when answering enquiries would give them our numbers and away they would go.We went back to the same forum and posted a response and explained that we only operated on telephone contact from that time on.We were smart enough to have our phone #s on the post which I think put a sudden stop to their activities. Most people who are on the up and up can supply references going back many years.Be carefull with you numbers because if someone can use my social sec, number they can get access to any other details they need on open forums...Ray ..M.D.Horse Transport
If any one wants details of what we did about this call me ..719/740/2688
: YES, YES, YES......Using a "LEGAL"
: hauler ensures that your horse is INSURED
: should something go wrong. Any legal
: transporter will have a USDOT and an MC
: number. You will pay more but at least you
: have peace of mind. Using a "backyard
: hauler" is an ILLEGAL transporter. NO
: USDOT or MC number = NO INSURANCE regardless
: of what they tell you. When hauling for
: compensation, private policys DO NOT cover
: the items being transported, there MUST be a
: commercial policy in place to cover the
: cargo which is MANDATED by the USDOT and the
: FMCSA. Sould you use an illegal hauler and
: something were to go wrong you have no
: recourse. Every day we hear horror stories
: of illegals getting stopped, the driver is
: put in jail, the truck and trailer are
: impounded ALONG WITH THE HORSES!!!! Sould
: your horse get injured, again you have no
: recourse. In addition, IF you choose to hire
: an illegal hauler and he gets into somekind
: of trouble with the police or DOT
: enforcement officer or whatever.....YOU ARE
: RESPONSIBLE!!!! YOU HIRED THEM!!!!! Like
: it or not, THEY WORK FOR YOU!!!!
:
: Hope this helps.

: A friend told me to use a transporter that
: could provide me with their operating
: authority and dot number. Is this a
: necessity for shipping horses?
