YES, YES, YES......Using a "LEGAL" hauler ensures that your horse is INSURED should something go wrong. Any legal transporter will have a USDOT and an MC number. You will pay more but at least you have peace of mind. Using a "backyard hauler" is an ILLEGAL transporter. NO USDOT or MC number = NO INSURANCE regardless of what they tell you. When hauling for compensation, private policys DO NOT cover the items being transported, there MUST be a commercial policy in place to cover the cargo which is MANDATED by the USDOT and the FMCSA. Sould you use an illegal hauler and something were to go wrong you have no recourse. Every day we hear horror stories of illegals getting stopped, the driver is put in jail, the truck and trailer are impounded ALONG WITH THE HORSES!!!! Sould your horse get injured, again you have no recourse. In addition, IF you choose to hire an illegal hauler and he gets into somekind of trouble with the police or DOT enforcement officer or whatever.....YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE!!!! YOU HIRED THEM!!!!! Like it or not, THEY WORK FOR YOU!!!!

: A friend told me to use a transporter that
: could provide me with their operating
: authority and dot number. Is this a
