With reference to David James Hanson I have managed to trace the following details. At the time of his death he was attached to 838 squadron,Fleet Air Arm, based at RAF Harrowbeer ,an obscure airfield operated by 10 Group. His Swordfish aircraft, serial no.NE923 failed to return from a rocket projectile attack on a beached German Elbing class destroyer at Isle Vierge,Brittany. The other two crew were also killed,S/L Hayward,RN New Zealand and L/A BL Rowntree. It is very likely that D.Hanson would have trained at Crail. Unfortunately almost all the official records were destroyed for this airfield so it would be almost impossible to confirm this. If you ever come across anyone who has Fleet Air Arm pilots log books or records please let me know. I can pass the information on to the official Fleet Air Arm historian. Regarding the future of Crail airfield I am not too hopeful for its preservation. Since the creation of the Scottish Paliament it has actually become easier to demolish listed buildings if they obstruct development projects.I sometimes wonder why I voted in favour of devolution!
