As owners of Crail Airfield, we are not trying to delist it, but attempting to run a business while finding a suitable use for the airfield (farm). For the record, it is not listed, but scheduled as an Ancient Monument. We are attempting to provide enabling development to protect the most important buildings of interest on site, while trying to make a living. Historic Scotland and Fife Council are spending over 40 thousand pounds of taxpayers money on a feasibility study to find a way forward before it crumbles to nothing. Every roof has asbestos and requires a toxic substance report. If there are any bodies out there that would like to provide money to look after this monument then donations can be made to DI Robertson Farms LTD - the owners of 90% of the site. Surely when writing a book the authors should have researched the sites current status, as well as the severe restrictions and problems faced by landowners when scheduling occurs. If you are interested in the correct status of the airfield there is a booklet available from Historic Scotland, which explains what happens when a property is scheduled (not listed) - "Scheduled Ancient Monuments and Landowners Responsibility". I would suggest reading this booklet before making any further accusations about the site or its owners. If this really is the best preserved WW2 airfield left in the UK then why is it only valued at arable prices? Right or wrong, even the planes that flew from Crail are considered to be worth more than the site? With the greatest respect to those that were stationed at Crail, it is now a crumbling site, which will eventually fall down if funds are not found to preserve it, which realistically will have to incorporate some sort of development at some stage, like it or not. If you would like to help preserve it or contribute in a constructive manner rather than making rather vague accusations, then we are willing to listen.
