Dear Bruce,
Thanks for your message. I have no objection to you using the information supplied. It was based on the Book of Remembrance at Crail Museum which lists all the personnel killed while serving at H.M.S. Jackdaw between 1940-1946.It was compiled by Harold Harrison who served at this airfield during the latter stages of World War II. He currently lives in Lancashire. Ray Sturtivant's book on Fleet Air Arm Aircraft 1939-1945 gives the following information involving the crash of Sub. Lt.(A) A.Moores Sea Hurricane. The aircraft's engine was on fire ,and it dived out of cloud crashing half a mile east of Cruden Bay Railway Station,Cruden Bay-Peterhead Road. A.Moores baled out at 100feet and was killed. 778 squadron was a special trials unit involved in testing all sorts of naval aircraft and equipment. There machines flew all over Scotland and often deployed to other airfields. Most of the other crashes involving Crail's aircraft occurred around the Firth of Forth. I hope my small book on Crail and Dunino Airfields will be available within a month or so.It will be on sale at Crail Museum and at aviation bookshops.I have previously done a publication on Donibristle Airfield. 812 squadron is mentioned in my book but most of the information is based on what is on the website. Unfortunately I found that the PRO does not have many of the Fleet Air Arm squadron log books. There were virtually no records of the training units based at Crail which means the bulk of their history is now lost to time.
Best wishes Malcolm Fife.
