There are numerous photographs on the website taken of Hiroshima when the ship visited Japan in 1946, some were offerd for sale to the crew who couldn't get ashore by the ship's photographer.
Many of the crew went ashore to witness the damage caused by the Atom Bomb, many bringing back souvenirs found in the rubble.
Although I cannot comment on your Grandfather's medical condition, there were very many who have lived to a 'good age' and are still living.
I have had previous enquiries about cancer caused by visting Japan and the asbestos within the ship itself, to date, none of these have been proven to be the cause.
