Looking at my grandfathers death certif. recently prompted me to ask my father about the incident in which my g/father sustained injuries leading to his death the next day. Apparrently he was on HM Patrol Boat Wellwyn which was picking up torpedoes dropped from Fairey Swordfish from HMS Jackdaw on practice runs. They were using a target ship to aim at and operations were being filmed from the ferry Isle of Thanet. Pilots were then shown the films as a training aid. On one run to pick up spent torpedoes the Wellwyn was hit by the Isle of Thanet and was in fear of sinking. The Wellwyn made for Anstruther and just made it. My g/father died in Cellardyke the next day. Does anyone out there have any memories, records, or photes of the events that were happening at or around that time. Or, is there anyone who knows how I can find out about HM Patrol Boat Wellwyn?.
